Christian Fischer, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Scholar - University of California, Irvine

I am a distinguished postdoctoral scholar at the Teaching and Learning Research Center and the Digital Learning Lab at the University of California, Irvine working under the mentorship of Mark Warschauer. I received my Ph.D. in Learning Technologies from the School of Education at the University of Michigan under the mentorship of Barry Fishman. My dissertation received the Robert Schuck Distinguished Dissertation in Teacher Education Award from the Association of Teacher Educators. Previously, I studied Education, Physics, and Mathematics at the Ruhr University Bochum, the ETH Zurich, and the University of California, Berkeley.

My research interests are situated in the intersections of learning technologies, science teacher education, and higher education. My interdisciplinary research projects empirically explore and evaluate ways to increase educational effectiveness for STEM learning and teaching. I mostly apply methodological traditions related to learning analytics, educational data mining, social network analysis, experimental and quasi-experimental designs for generalized causal inference, and survey research and measurement.

Research

My research is guided by the mission to improve teaching and learning processes in STEM education, in particular through digital technologies, mostly applying quantitative research methodologies. More details on my current research projects are described on the research site.

Funding

I am affiliated with two large-scale NSF-funded research projects which analyze teacher change in relation to the revised AP science exams and the role of virtual learning environments in higher education. More details on these projects and other grants and awards are listed on the grants & awards site.

Publications

A list of my academic publications and presentations are described on the publications site. My publications and descriptions of other academic work are also listed on my curriculum vitae.
